The OOO embarked on a European heritage journey from Taiwan spanning over 1460 days, with the goal of reviving a 200-year-old craft history. Starting from Scotland, they crossed the continent, entering Slovenia and the Czech Republic, ultimately finding their way to Italy in their quest to explore the art of hand-cut glass.

Limited to 198 pieces, this contemporary design from a Scottish designer is meticulously hand-cut and crafted in Italy. It features a continuous crystal whisky glass, starting from the side and extending all the way to the base, inviting you to experience the casual whisky drinking of OOO.

 

 

The European vintage engraving beloved by Asians is, in the hearts of young Scots, a representation of antiquity.

In contrast, OOO testing tumbler is a response from Scottish designer Nicol Boyd to the sense of whisky drinking rituals in Asia. OOO's limited edition Italian hand-cut crystal whisky glass, on the other hand, is created by Chen Jing-Wen, the founder from Taiwan, who brings her Asian cultural experience and highlights interesting differences observed in comparison to Scotland.

Like young people all over the world, there are times when they may have some doubts or awkard reactions to their parents' sense of aesthetics.

When Nicol's Scottish parents presented him with a whole set of antique crystal glasses as an heirloom wedding gift, Nicol could only politely express his thanks for the thoughtful gesture, but declined the crystal glasses with their traditional patterns and sparkling craftsmanship.

 

A neutral and contemporary approach, casual enjoyment, that's the standard posture for OOO whisky tasting.

Turning the old-fashioned into contemporary, breaking free from the stereotypical image of whisky as something to be enjoyed only after achieving success; that's where OOO's whisky project concept began. The story is quite lengthy, but let's start with the conclusion:

At one point, 80% of cut crystal glass came from the UK, and the renowned Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton (WWRD) group, which produced these crystals, went bankrupt in 2009. Eastern European workshops would only accept orders in large quantities to sustain their operations. After experiencing the rise and fall of hand-cut glass in Europe, OOO finally arrived in Italy, the source of crystal cutting, placing their hopes in the skilled Florence master craftsmen, known for cutting church glass and chandelier vases.

 

OOO Whiky Glass, like its other glass products, still begins with hand-blown lead-free crystal glasses in Florence.

However, Italian craftsmen are accustomed to cutting large objects with coarse grinding wheels and few cutting lines. In contrast, OOO has approximately 60 cuts per glass, almost twice the number of traditional antique glasses! Ultimately, relying on the master's years of skilled experience, they start by marking out zones on the glass, then manually hold the crystal glass against the grinding wheel, accurately spacing out the cutting patterns, and controlling the intricacy of the cutting lines.

 

 

By identical curved angles inside and outside the glass to express the gender-neutral nature of whisky.

OOO's limited edition Italian hand-cut crystal whisky glass features a smooth circular interior design to replace the traditional rigid lines of whisky glasses, allowing the spirit to flow freely and smoothly in the glass, whether with ice or neat. The exterior bottom of the glass is also designed with the same curved angles, avoiding the oversized, masculine design of classical whisky glasses, giving people more freedom to savor their drinks.

The rounded corners of the bottom of the glass presented a unique cutting challenge to the Italian craftsmen. When cutting continuously from the wall of the glass to the bottom due to the curved appearance, it was even more difficult to control the lines to maintain a crisp straight edge, significantly increasing the difficulty of the craftsmanship.

After four years of effort, OOO's limited edition Italian hand-cut crystal whisky glass, with only a 30% success rate, can only be introduced as a limited edition handmade crystal craft to the public. This project is temporarily on hold but still ongoing, as OOO continues to strive for improvements in the technique. After these 198 successful attempts to overcome the craftsmanship challenges, perhaps in the future, the lost artisanal skill of glass cutting can be recovered in other countries.
